Why Don't Tall Men's Clothes Fit Tall Men?

I'm 6'5" with a 34-inch waist, and buying clothes has been a frustrating experience for as long as I can remember. High street retailers, luxury fashion houses, sportswear brands and even tall clothing specialists often leave me choosing between length, comfort and appearance.

Trousers that expose your ankles. Joggers that squeeze your thighs and crotch when you sit down. Or trousers with so much extra material they could double as a parachute. Jackets with sleeves that stop short of your wrists, and T-shirts that reveal your midriff when you raise your arms.

Being tall doesn't necessarily mean being big. Yet finding clothes that fit a tall, lean or athletic build can feel almost impossible.

The problem with tall men's clothing

I speak to other tall men who share these frustrations. We spend hours searching online, checking size charts and ordering something that looks promising, only to send it back when it arrives. Some high street retailers offer tall ranges, but styles, colours and inseam choices can be limited. In my experience, many options stop around a 35-inch inseam, leaving men who usually wear 36 or 38 inches struggling.

My experience with Next: too much material, not enough length

I've tried tall men's trousers from Next, but they haven't worked for my proportions. I've found them too generous around the thighs and crotch, with unnecessary bulk, yet my ankles are still exposed. It's too much material in the wrong places and not enough length where I need it.

My experience with 2Tall: longer legs, restrictive proportions

I've also tried 36-inch inseam slim-fit trousers from 2Tall. The leg length addresses one problem, but I've found the thighs and crotch too tight and restrictive, especially when sitting. At the same time, the silhouette has more visual weight and excess material in some areas than I'd like. The length is there, but I still have to compromise on comfort and shape.

Big and Tall isn't the same as Slim and Tall

Another major frustration is that many retailers serving taller men focus on Big and Tall: clothing for men who need extra width as well as extra length. That market matters, but it doesn't meet everyone's needs.

Finding clothes for tall slim men shouldn't be this difficult. I'm 6'5" with a 34-inch waist. I don't need an oversized jacket or trousers cut for a much wider waist. I need longer clothing designed for my proportions.

Clothing for tall athletic men can be equally hard to find. Muscular thighs or broad shoulders don't automatically mean a man needs a baggy waist or oversized body. A tall athletic man might want room to move alongside a neat, tapered silhouette.

What many of us want is tall men's clothing that isn't baggy, but isn't restrictive either. Too often the choice is between garments long enough but too wide, or garments that fit our build but are too short. Height and build are different things.

Adding length doesn't solve the problem

Too often, tall clothing feels like a standard garment with extra length added to the legs, sleeves or body. But trousers also need the right rise, crotch shape, thigh room, knee position and taper. Slim fits can pull uncomfortably when sitting; regular fits can swamp the upper leg. Jackets can have long enough sleeves but still be too wide through the body or tight through the chest.

It's a three-dimensional problem, not just a question of adding inches.

Sportswear brands: plenty of search results, few options

Search for tall men's clothes or tall men's tracksuits and you'll often find major sportswear brands. But in my experience the selection can be small, unavailable in the UK, or sold out. I've even seen unavailable items listed on resale sites at much higher prices. When longer sizes do exist, the fit still isn't guaranteed: some are restrictive around the hips and thighs, while others feel shapeless.

Luxury fashion: higher prices don't guarantee a better fit

Paying more hasn't solved the issue for me. A luxury jacket might have sleeves that are too short in my usual size; sizing up can leave the body too wide. Trousers can be the right waist but wrong length, or the right length but wrong waist. Tailoring helps sometimes, but it can't always correct proportions that were wrong from the start.

The real problem: tall men have different proportions

Two men of the same height can have very different inseams. Two men with the same waist and inseam can need different room in the thighs, hips and rise. The same goes for torso length, shoulders and sleeves. Good tall clothing needs to balance these measurements together.

Tall men don't need bigger clothes. We need better-proportioned clothes.

The solution: why I created Antero

After years of struggling to find clothes that worked for me, I decided to try to do something about it. That's how Antero was born: premium everyday athleisure designed with taller proportions in mind, especially for men with slim, lean or athletic builds.

We started with a tracksuit because it's versatile and one of the hardest things I've found to get right. I wanted a clean, modern silhouette with the length tall men need, without sacrificing comfort.

Trousers designed for taller proportions

For our tracksuit trousers, we considered the front and back rise, added a gusseted crotch for movement, balanced room through the thighs and used a slim tapered leg. We offer Tall and Extra Tall lengths, with guidance for men who usually wear 33–38-inch inseams. The goal is a comfortable, streamlined fit rather than simply a longer version of standard trousers.

A jacket designed to complement the fit

We also considered sleeve length, body length and overall shape when developing the jacket. Both garments use a woven fabric made from 90% nylon and 10% spandex, chosen for its comfort, flexibility and suitability for everyday casual wear.

Fit shouldn't be a compromise

I don't pretend one tracksuit solves every problem in tall men's clothing. We're a new independent brand, and we're still learning and improving. But we started with tall proportions in mind, not as an afterthought.

Being tall shouldn't mean spending hours searching, paying more for limited options or settling for clothes that don't fit. We deserve clothing that looks good, feels comfortable and fits the way it should.

Higher standards. A better fit.
